AB 844, a new law regarding scrap metal recycling, became effective December 1, 2008. This bill was designed to help deter thieves from stealing scrap metal for quick cash at recycling centers. It also protects citizens and businesses from the damage caused by metal theft and can possibly help to recover stolen property.

AB 844 requires recycling centers to obtain:

• A copy of a government issued ID card

• Thumbprint

• Photograph of material

• Photograph of customer

In addition we are required to HOLD PAYMENT FOR 3 BUSINESS DAYS.
